Princess of Wales Hospital recognised for patient safety

Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB’s Princess of Wales Hospital is celebrating after being named as a National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider after successfully completing a national programme of local data audits.

The NJR monitors the performance of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement operations to improve clinical outcomes for the benefit of patients, clinicians and industry.

The ‘NJR Quality Data Provider’ certificate scheme was introduced to offer hospitals a blueprint for reaching high quality standards relating to patient safety and reward those who have met registry targets in this area.

In order to achieve the award, hospitals were required to meet a series of six ambitious targets during the audit period 2019/20:  compliance with the NJR’s mandatory national audit, assessing data completeness, quality within the registry, checking the accurate number of joint replacement procedures, high level of patients consenting and demonstrating timely responses to any alerts issued by the NJR.

This is a unique award which demonstrates the high standards being met by Princess of Wales Hospital.  We know that meeting these NJR targets requires a strong departmental effort and this award is also a way for the NJR to thank all staff who have worked to achieve compliance with the registry during 2019/20.

National Joint Registry Medical Director, Mr Tim Wilton, said: “Congratulations to colleagues at the Princess of Wales Hospital.  The Quality Data Provider Award demonstrates the high standards being met towards ensuring compliance with the NJR and is often a reflection of strong departmental efforts to achieve such status …. the audit being a fundamental driver to inform improved quality of care for patients.”

The database at POWH is maintained by Surgical Care Practitioners’ Gaynor Jones, Nicola Bayliss and Randy Guro. They said that they were “very pleased” to receive the award after their combined hard work and “will strive” to maintain the benchmark in the future! They wanted to thank Mr Matthew Smith from the Clinical Audit department for his ongoing contribution.

POWH NJR Lead Mr Sateesh Gokhale said that he was, “extremely proud “of the team.

T&O Clinical Lead Mr Dave Robinson mentioned that they, “thoroughly deserve the award”.

Clinical Director Mr Richard Johnson went on to say, “this is excellent news and I would like to congratulate the team on this great achievement”.

NJR Regional Clinical Co-ordinator for South East Wales Mr Amit Chandratreya was extremely happy to see that the award went to one of the hospitals he oversees; and he understands the “logistical difficulties” faced by the Trusts to submit the data.
