Park Plaza Cardiff links up with 'Giving to Pink' for an October full of fundraising afternoon teas

Giving to Pink was founded by Clare Smart, during her own journey through breast cancer in 2014. Clare soon put a fundraising group of people together whose lives had been touched in some way by breast cancer. The group, in its 9th year, consists of grateful patients, their friends and their families and healthcare professionals within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

“Park Plaza is renowned for serving a superb selection of Afternoon Teas and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we thought it would be wonderful to support this charity. A charity that is so close to all our hearts.  We are thrilled to support a local charity where every penny made goes directly to Giving To Pink – no payroll costs (all volunteers), no head office or overhead costs.

“Giving to Pink was born out of Clare’s determination to give something back to the hospital and clinical teams that looked after her so well following her breast cancer diagnosis. During the years that followed, Clare was resolute that the centre of excellence, for breast care patients, would become a reality, and fundraising efforts, have over time, been supported by the Community to which the group is eternally grateful.

“Giving To Pink has now raised over £300,000 and the centre of excellence named The Snowdrop Centre officially opened on 21st September 2023.

“Clare, sadly passed away in August this year, and whilst Clare was often seen as the ‘face’ of ‘Giving to Pink’, it was never about her - it was about inspiring a community to pull together and do great things in the best interest of others. Clare was pleased the Centre would be supporting patients, at difficult times, dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis and now offering them the kind of facilities they deserved.

“The fundraising doesn’t stop here though, the Snowdrop Centre will need to be ‘kitted out’ to improve the environment and the high standards of care for breast cancer patients and the link up with the Park Plaza, Cardiff and the timing couldn’t have been better.

“Clare’s husband Gareth Smart, wants to ensure that Clare’s legacy lives on and was delighted when the Park Plaza, Cardiff approached him to ask if they could be a part of this fundraising drive during the month of October, Gareth said: “Clare loved life and enjoyed time with friends and family in the Park Plaza Cardiff, over the years, I couldn’t think of a better way to raise funds in Clare’s memory and I am grateful to Margaret and her team at the Park Plaza Cardiff for their enthusiasm and passion in supporting Giving to Pink.”

He adds: “Giving to Pink was Clare’s legacy to the community and she continued to work tirelessly during the last weeks and days of her life, ensuring the good work would continue.

“We hope her legacy lives on through the work that the fund raising group does in the future and this fundraising partnership with the Park Plaza, Cardiff certainly will play an essential part to ensure it does.”

Margaret Waters, General Manager and her Team at Park Plaza are thrilled to support this very worthy charity and hope to attract as many guests as possible to enjoy our Pink Afternoon Tea. Park Plaza will be donating 10% of proceeds for each afternoon tea sold during the month of October. What better way of raising funds than enjoying a superb afternoon tea at Park Plaza Cardiff with friends & family.
