Celebrations for our Management Graduate Trainees

We were delighted yesterday to celebrate three management graduate trainees mark the end of their first two placements on the management programme; leading onto their final placement with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB).

CTM’s management programme is divided into three placements of seven months, with the course running for a total of two years. The programme is aimed at trainees gaining academic knowledge as well as a hands-on learning experience, based in placements across Wales in primary care, secondary care and a corporate division; dependent on the trainee’s placement organisation.

Throughout the programme each trainee receives extensive mentorship, coaching, training and a comprehensive orientation tour in the organisation so they can make the most out of their experience.

In September 2021, three graduates Shannon Wills, Siobhan Flynn and Matthew Kvedaras, joined us in CTMUHB on their final placement.  Their journey started with a four week organisational induction programme which provided a strategic overview of CTMUHB. This included values and behaviours workshops, meeting the CEO and senior managers and mentors throughout the Health Board as well completing core training to enable them to develop skills in management and compassionate leadership.  They also toured different departments and hospitals to gain knowledge of the different areas of work and specialties. The graduates then took up placements within the Health Board based on their chosen career path.

Matthew has worked in the NHS for 13 years, first as a healthcare support worker then a registered nurse and more recently a deputy ward manger. Matthew’s experience varies with nine years in medicine (gastroenterology and stroke) and four years in emergency medicine.

Matthew said: “I am very excited to be part of this cohort and I am thoroughly looking forward to working among a variety of different teams within the health board. This course in particular provides both experience within a management setting and the opportunity to study a MSc in Health Leadership, which hopefully will provide the foundations to become a successful manager within the NHS.”

Shannon is a management graduate based in the Princess of Wales Hospital.  She graduated from the University of South Wales Business School with a degree in Business and Management and training in Project Management. Shannon has two years of NHS experience carrying out different roles within the education and development department and supporting workforce and organisational development. During the pandemic Shannon supported the vaccination programme and planning.

Shannon said: “I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge through the management trainee programme and enhancing my compassionate leadership skills, with the intention to gain as much of a variety of experiences through different teams within the health board to become a successful NHS manager.”

Siobhan is based in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.  Siobhan is a registered mental health nurse and has experience in acute adult inpatients, substance misuse detox nursing and also electroconvulsive therapy nursing. She has a Masters in Public Health and Health Promotion.

Siobhan said: ”My aspirations on this course are to learn and absorb as much as I can from everyone around me by taking advantage of every opportunity. In doing so, I can hopefully contribute to change and improvement for our service users and staff.”

Michelle Hurley-Tyers, Assistant Director of Employee Experience and Wellbeing for CTMUHB, said: “It’s great to be here today celebrating the management graduates’ journey so far and welcoming the three graduates to the health board for the final stage of their programme.

“To hear the graduates reflect on their learning and listen to how they have contributed in their placement areas has been inspiring.   Our values and behaviours have clearly been key to the way they have approached their duties and they have embraced each learning experience.  We look forward to supporting them throughout the last stage of their management programme.”

Claire Monks, NHS Wales Graduate Leadership Programme Manager, HEIW said: “I am so pleased to be here today to celebrate the graduates.  It’s been an absolute pleasure to be a part of Matthew, Shannon and Siobhan’s journeys on the graduate programme.  Their work ethic and passion for the NHS is evident and I look forward to seeing what they go on to achieve on the programme and beyond.”
