Primary Care Welsh language duties

In bullet points below is what Primary Care providers, such as GP surgeries, NHS dentists and community pharmacies with terms of agreement, contract and/or service with the Health Board are expected to do.

The legislation which brought in what are called the Six Duties is the NHS (Welsh in Primary Care Services) (Miscellaneous Amendments) (Wales) Regulations 2019.

If you would like more information on the use of Welsh in Primary Care, see the Welsh Government’s webpage here.

The Six Duties:

  1. Providers will encourage their staff to ask you your language preference and record this on digital systems;
  2. Providers will encourage staff who speak Welsh to wear a badge or lanyard to convey that, available from the Health Board;
  3. Providers will inform the Health Board where the provider can provide services in Welsh, so that we can promote these services;
  4. Providers will encourage the provider's staff to use information or go to training sessions from the Health Board to improve their awareness of the importance of Welsh in care, the history of our language and its use today, and how Welsh can be used when providing services;
  5. Providers will ensure that documents and forms from the Health Board are available to you in Welsh & English;
  6. Providers will display their signage in Welsh and English.
